What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the controlled use of essential oils to maintain good health and revitalise the body, mind & spirit.

Essential oils are volatile aromatic oils extracted from a plant source. E.g. steam distillation, cold press or enfleurage.

How Aromatherapy Effects the Body

Essential oils due to their solubility in oil and alcohol can be ideal when incorporated into cosmetics and general skincare. The skin’s health more often than not, is reflective of internal conditions; be they emotional, hormonal, nervous or toxins within the blood.

Every essential oil has different chemical properties and so particular oils are beneficial for solving particular ailments.  Once the essential oil molecules enter the blood stream they can alter body systems, emotions and moods.

The hypothalamus is within the limbic brain system and is sensitive to signals from aromatic molecules. Smell is processed by this part of the brain that is involved in memory and emotions. This part of the brain also releases chemical signals within the endocrine system to start and stop the production of hormones. It has specialised nerve fibres for the reception of nerve signals and the secretion of hormones.
